History & Background
Otis A. Smith was a prolific maker of small pocket revolvers from about 1874 until the late1880’s. Born in 1836 to Scottish immigrants, Smith worked as a pistol maker for Ira Johnson until 1879. In 1881 Smith bought the property of Ira Johnson’s pistol factory in Rockfall, CT, which had burned to the ground two years earlier. Smith produced his own designs and patents under the Smith name as well as under US Revolver Co., US Arms Co., Maltby-Henly and others. For a while Smith was also a principal shareholder in the Norwich Falls Pistol Co. as well. By the late 1880’s, the market had been flooded with cheap pocket revolvers, and Smith changed his business model to concentrate on farming and gardening implements, and tools. One of the most prominent citizens of Rockfall, Smith built a magnificent mansion in the town, which is still as splendid today as it was then. Smith retired in the early 1920’s and passed away in 1924.
