Original M1883 Double Action Reichsrevolver, 44 Russian/10.6 x 25mmR German Service Revolver, very RARE!
This is a rare double-action variant and was manufactured by the V.C. Schilling and C. G. Haenel Consortium in Suhl. It is stamped with several inspection marks and proofs. It was made under a government contract and not for issue to regulars. There are no unit markings on this one, suggesting it was issued to an officer not assigned to a particular unit. It is in excellent condition, with all of the blue intact. This is the matte "arsenal" finish as was customary for military issue side arms. The action is strong and accurate, and the cylinder indexes and locks without wiggle. The bore of the 4 1/2 inch barrel is excellent and bright, with sharp rifling. All matching numbers, including the cylinder pin, screw heads and escutcheons. The walnut grips are excellent, with sharp and undamaged checkering. SN 265, excellent overall.
The M1883 followed the larger M1879 as a lighter, more manageable model, with minor modifications to the cylinder pin lock, grip and frame shape. In every other respect it is identical to the older model. It was first issued in 1883, and continued to be in service as the official side arm of the Imperial German Army until 1908, when it was replaced by the Luger pistol. Reserve units, police and militia continued to carry this revolver well into the 1930's. The "Reichskommissionsrevolver" was produced by a variety of manufacturers, including Mauser Werke, Schilling, Haenel, Spangenberg and the Imperial arsenal at Erfurt. The gun was chambered in a 10.6 x 25mm rimmed cartridge which is almost identical to a .44 Russian cartridge, and can be interchanged with the same. The double action variant of this model was only available for officers, and some were also sold on the civilian market.
