History And Background
The Hood Firearms Co. of Norwich, CT was in business from about 1870 to 1878. It was formed by Freeman W. Hood, who also had control of the Norwich Falls Pistol Co. among others. Hood produced a wide variety of compact firearms and was also known for high-quality, elaborately finished pocket revolvers in larger calibers. It is estimated that more of them were produced by Hood than all the other makers combined. Not much is known about the various business ventures of Freeman Hood, except that he seemed to have his hands in many enterprises, with interests in the Norwich Lock Mfg. Co., Continental Arms, and Bacon Mfg. Co. In the end Hood was still one of the smaller companies which could not survive the US economic crisis of the late 1870's. Although nothing is known about the final disposition of his business assets, he undoubtedly died a rich man.
