An original Winchester Model 12 Riot gun. It has been checked out by a gunsmith to make sure it was a genuine riot gun. 1st time in my life I’ve ever seen one on townpost or in Canada. The gunsmith contacted Winchester office in North America to verify if it was a genuine riot gun. Winchester confirmed it was indeed an original. It was issued sometime shortly after 1912 to the Seattle police PD. Winchester manufactured the riot guns and distributed them to different police departments throughout the US. Each police dept had their set on initials stamped on each stock. This one showing SPD refers to the Seattle PD. The gunsmith indicated the internals of this gun are in excellent shape. The screws for the take down are like new he said. The gun has been very well looked after. It still loads and functions fine. This is basically a trench gun with a few differences. The differences being a short barrel with a full choke instead of a cylinder bore on the trench guns. It doesn’t have the bayonet lugs for mounting a bayonet. I have read with doing research online that you can add a trench gun heat shield. It’s something you would have to talk to a gunsmith about. They originally came with a 20 inch barrel but this show’s slightly over 18 inches. So it’s an 18 inch barrel with a full choke. He did test fire it and at 25 meters it was leaving pattern’s about the size of a dinner plate. He also recommended not to fire anything below a #3 shot out of it or below. This was never meant to fire buck shot. It was meant to disperse crowds. Once again as I indicated the internals are all in very good condition. This is the only Model 12 riot gun I’ve ever seen listed in Canada. It has a smaller profile than a regular Model 12 Winchester. All nickel steel, receiver and barrel so it has a high degree of corrosion resistance. Also has a Very slick action.
